It’s All In Your Mind

by Elly Hurley on 21 May, 2012

Our mind is amazing, and can be a great ally if we allow it to be. And trust me, it’s better to have your mind as an ally than an enemy. One of my favourite quotes from Henry Ford, which I have used previously

is, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.”

These words ring so true for me, and trust me when I say I’ve been on both sides of this statement and without fail (pun intended) I had a 100% success rate. That is, until I learnt a fairly simple technique to remove my limiting decisions. Since then, I’ve never looked back, and my success rate has moved considerably in favour of yes you can.

I’ve always considered myself a glass half full kind of girl, always looking on the bright side of life, finding the positive rather than the negative in most situations and people. And yet there were still times in the past when I’d doubt my abilities and basically talk myself out of doing something. On the rare occasions I find myself doing this now – even with the knowledge I have – I can ‘change’ my thoughts, from my enemy into my ally. I’m not always successful on the first attempt but I now know that to succeed I must keep trying until I get it right.

As an example I’ve hit a bit of a plateau over the last couple of weeks with my weight loss goals. My fitness level has improved, my clothes are feeling looser but the scales aren’t playing ball. In the past this would have been enough for me to throw in the towel and give up. So what’s changed and why is it different this time? One thing – my mind! I’m now looking at the whole picture and not just a portion of it with blinkers on.

Nike have a wonderful tag line, “Just Do It”, and sometimes that’s what it comes down to, stop thinking and over analysing a situation and just damn well do it. Then, once you’ve achieved what you set out to do you can look back, shake your head and think, “what was I thinking!”.

And you can to, the first step is tuning in to your self talk and listening to what you’re saying to yourself. Don’t try to change it to begin with, just listen. As you become more a-tuned you can begin to make small changes and little by little you will find the negative ‘enemy‘ within will become your positive ‘ally‘ and number 1 supporter. And with that sort of internal support, the world is your oyster and anything is achievable.

So what’s holding you back? Go forth and make your dreams come true. Until next time, sweet dreams xx

  • This is so true, thank you for pointing out something that is so obvious once you think about it. I have a bit of work to do, and will be paying close attention to my inner voice from now on. She’s needs a bit of a tune up 🙂
