Release Your Inner Child – Gangnam Style

by Elly Hurley on 19 October, 2012

In my last blog I mentioned there were two extraordinary events that had occurred this week, the first being Felix Baumgarters skydive. The second extraordinary event I was referring to the Psy-mania that has swept around the world since he released Gangnam Style on 15 July this year (2012).

So what is it about Gangnam Style that has made it such a huge success? Every artist, songwriter, producer, marketer, and business owner should be asking this question.

Let’s look at the facts. A very well dressed, podgy South Korean guy named Psy uploads his latest song Gangnam Style to YouTube. The song has a really catchy beat, and lyrics I don’t understand but I still hum along to it. And the horse dance is just plain crazy, I love it. But best of all, whenever I hear it or see it, I smile. It’s a happy song with a silly dance that brings out the kid in me again.

Psy said doing it Gangnam Style is about “Dressing classy and acting cheesy” in a recent appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show while he was teaching Britney Spears how to do the now-famous horse dance.

There are no language barriers when it comes to music and dance, they are one of the few universal languages we have in the world. One of the other’s is a smile. Gangnam Style combines all of these, and Psy has hit the jackpot.

And, in doing so has shown the world what we need more of, humour and fun. I don’t know about you but I’m sick and tired on turning on the television only to be bombarded with bad news. It’s not much different when you read the newspaper or listen to the radio, there is so much doom and gloom in the world and Psy offer’s a little light relief with Gangnam Style.

So next time you have a conversation with someone, forget about all the doom and gloom in the world and celebrate your life. Have fun, do something silly (like the horse dance) and release your inner child. S/he’s always there waiting to be let loose. Try it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the results.

I’m off to practice my dance moves, my inner child is itching to be let loose this weekend. Who knows, I might just see you on the dance floor xx
